Winter weather in Virginia is anything but predictable. From blizzards to unseasonably warm days, it feels like no two winters are exactly the same. But thanks to the Old Farmer's Almanac winter forecast for Virginia, we can do our best to prepare for the months ahead. And this year looks like it will be slightly warmer than normal. But, if you like snow and cold, don't worry. We've got some of that in the forecast, too.
There's no doubt about it: Virginia is beautiful in the winter. And yet, frosty temperatures and harsh winds can make those cold months seem to drag on and on. While the Old Farmer's Almanac winter weather predictions for Virginia say it will be slightly warmer than usual, we'll still see some cold and higher-than-usual snowfall. Virginia averages 17 inches of snow annually, although exact totals depend on where you live. Unfortunately, snow isn't forecasted for Christmas.
When it snows, take advantage by getting outside. My favorite way to spend a snowy day, when I lived in Lexington, was to stroll downtown, stop for a slice of homemade Boston cream pie at a local bakery, and enjoy the snowy scenery. A winter walk, ice skating, snow tubing, and hiking are just a few of the many winter activities in Virginia.
The coldest temperatures of the winter are forecasted from the middle of January until the beginning of February and again at the end of the month. January and February will see an average temperature of 30 and 27 degrees Fahrenheit respectively.
Before the cold weather arrives, start preparing. Keep your car stocked with essentials, including a first aid kit, phone chargers, blankets or extra clothes, an ice scraper, salt, water, and snacks.
Those cold days of February will give way to a mild daily temperature of around 41 degrees Fahrenheit in March. Virginia will likely prove that old saying "in like a lion, out like a lamb" true, kicking off with rain and flurries while ending with warmer temperatures.
This winter won't be uneventful, but it shouldn't be unbearable. To play it safe, be sure to bundle up and make sure your gear is water-resistant.
