Don't be fooled by the name: Dismal Falls is one of southwestern Virginia's most beautiful natural attractions. This 10-foot multi-tiered cascade is beautiful in any season, especially during the summer when outdoor temperatures are high. For those with an adventurous spirit, the falls make for an excellent day trip destination. And for those especially daring, the base of the falls is the perfect place for a breathtaking dip. Without further ado, here's how you can enjoy one of the best swimming holes in Virginia.
The Falls of Dismal can be accessed via a short trail near the designated parking area, located along State Route 671.
You can pinpoint the location of the falls by checking out Google Maps.
Given the fact that the waterfall is relatively close to the road, be mindful that the trail and swimming hole can be crowded during peak hours.
Once you arrive at the falls, you'll certainly understand what the hype is all about. The 40-foot-wide cascade is made up of a series of ledges, which give the falls a distinct stair-like appearance.
It's a wonderful set-up for sitting under the cool shade, enjoying a picnic lunch, or simply soaking in the natural beauty.
If you're daring enough to take the adventure one step further, you might even wade into the water. This base of the falls is famously refreshing and could be described as nature's own plunge pool.
The majority of the swimming hole is about 3 to 4 feet deep, depending on recent rainfall, but it can be deeper in some places, too.
The next time you're looking for a quick escape into nature, you'll love this natural swimming hole located in the heart of a national forest.
