Many people native to Virginia are surprised to learn that our state is home to what has been deemed "the Grand Canyon of the South." The Breaks is located in southwestern Virginia, right on the Kentucky border. The impressive five-mile gorge invites all kinds of activity, and perhaps none more rewarding than a good old fashioned hike. So if you're not quite up to the task of trekking through the real Grand Canyon, the trail at Breaks Interstate Park is a great place to start your canyon adventures.
Breaks Interstate Park is nearly 5,000 acres of beautiful land protected by committees in both Virginia and Kentucky. The canyon was formed over the course of millions of years by what’s known today as the Russel Fork River.
Breaks is the largest gorge east of the Mississippi River. It is believed that Daniel Boone was among the first frontiersmen to have discovered the canyon in 1767. The park continues to draw visitors with its incredible array of flowers, plants, and wildlife which alone would make this natural area a must-see.
And then, of course, there’s the view. The expansive gorge plummets 1,600 feet deep and might just take your breath away. The contrast of the delicate landscape and rugged terrain makes for an unforgettable vision. And if you’re up for a little adventure, you can hike down into the Breaks.
Breaks Interstate features many different hiking trails, most of which are short in length but can vary greatly in difficulty. One of the more popular hikes is known as Prospectors Trail. This trek shows off some great views of the canyon below while also moving past the unusual rocky outcrops. In total, Prospectors Trail runs for 1.5 miles and its difficulty is classified as moderate. The blazes on this trail are orange.
Overall, the park contains nearly 25 miles of hiking and biking trails. Although most of them are a mile or less, they can be connected to create a more lengthy hike. There are even activities at the bottom of the canyon, such as rafting the Russel Fork. No matter how you choose to spend your time at the Breaks, you’re in for an unforgettable day.
Breaks Interstate Park is located at 627 Commission Circle, Breaks, VA 24607.
