There are several places in Virginia that appear like something from another world. One prime example is the rockfield found at the top of Blackrock Summit. A hike to the top of this mountain peak provides breathtaking views of the surrounding valley. Not to mention how fun it is to scramble to the top! Once you've arrived at the peak, you can enjoy a stunning 360-degree view of Shenandoah.
Check it out:
Blackrock Summit is situated in the South District of Shenandoah National Park. The trailhead can be accessed at mile 84.4 along Skyline Drive.
There are several hikes that lead to the stunning overlook. One of the most convenient is the Blackrock Spur Trail & Trailfoot Mountain.
The circuit totals 1.6 miles in distance and is the easiest way to approach the summit. Over the course of one hour, hikers will gain an elevation of approximately 445 feet.
As you approach the climb, be sure to look around and observe the unique landscape. Following the Appalachian Trail south, the trail clears and winds its way around a rocky talus slope.
At this point, the trail will lead to the Blackrock Spur Trail, eventually guiding hikers towards the iconic boulder field
It’s nearly impossible to imagine, but these picturesque exposed rocks were once the seafloor of the Lapetus Ocean, a body of water that existed before the Appalachian Mountains.
Take your time to admire the view from the top. It’s here that hikers can appreciate a simply magical 360-degree view of Shenandoah National Park.
Framed by the rockfield, the splendid mountain views will appear all the more spectacular. Don’t forget your camera!
