Living with majestic mountains towering throughout the landscape, most Vermonters have conquered their fear of heights. But some of us still get that uncomfortable twinge when forced to change our perspective and view things from higher ground. Otter Creek Gorge Trail might leave you weak in the knees but the views are well worth it. Take this dramatic bridge hike for a peek at one of Vermont's hidden little natural wonders.
Located within the Trails Around Middlebury (TAM), the Otter Creek Gorge Trail is just over two miles long. The scenic hike follows a well-maintained loop trail through the Otter Creek Gorge Preserve.
Enjoy an easy walk through the shaded canopy of the preserve with only slight elevation changes along the way.
Enjoyable any time of the year, the trail meanders through the forest much like other trails you're accustomed to... that is until you reach the Arnold Bridge.
Your stomach may start to flutter as you approach the Arnold Bridge but rest assured this sturdy wooden construction will get you safely to the other side.
Many will caution those with a fear of heights, "Don't look down!" In this case, ignore that advice and peer right over the edge.
You'll be treated to the awe-inspiring view of the Otter Creek Gorge rushing and tumbling between the rocks.
Even in the wintertime when it's cold enough that ice begins to form, this natural wonder is a beautiful sight to behold.
Relish a hike full of breathtaking scenery along the Otter Creek Gorge Trail. You can even make this a longer excursion by adding a portion of the TAM to your hike.
Learn more and get directions to the trailhead by visiting the Middlebury Land Trust website.
