It’s hard to believe that people would continue to tempt fate each year, but the Huntington Gorge in Richmond continues to attract thousands of thrill seekers every summer. This deceptively beautiful gorge has a deadly history in Vermont which has taken the lives of 26 people since the 1950s.
The Huntington Gorge is well known for its beauty, so it’s no wonder that hikers and Vermonters enjoy exploring the area.
But despite the many warning signs about the dangers and deaths, people still use the gorge to cool down in the summer.
Vermont has many popular swimming holes that travelers and locals can enjoy if they choose to swim at a safer place.
The upper part of Huntington Gorge is where it’s the most dangerous. The steady undercurrent is deceptively strong.
One wrong step and you can be swept away with nothing to hold onto to save yourself.
A Vermont State Police Diver was one of the unfortunate deaths at Huntington Gorge. He died trying to retrieve a victim’s body.
Huntington Gorge is located on private property the owner allows thousands of people to enjoy the beauty of the falls each year. He has been trying to make it safer by installing signs warning of the potential dangers. Enter at your own risk!

Many of the 26 people who died were in their 20s and 30s. Tragedy has taken both Vermont residents as well as tourists.
Everyone should do research on any swimming hole or hiking area they plan to visit, and if there are warnings - please take note!
