The Little Known State Park In Vermont That’ll Be Your New Favorite Summer Destination

One of the best things about Vermont is that even in many of the more popular destinations, you still have your space. That's right, Vermont is not short on places to get away for some peace and quiet, but we've found a spectacular spot that is not too well known so you're sure to get some rest and relaxation. And the views? They're absolutely out of this world.

Allis State Park is Vermont’s second developed state park, and it is also one of Vermont’s least known parks. It is located on the summit of Bear Hill.

The stunning property was in the Allis family for several generations and used for farming. Wallace Allis allowed the public to enjoy the views from the top of the hill which was open pasture land with amazing views from just about any spot.

It was so popular that he willed it to the state of Vermont and can be enjoyed by all. There are still several stone walls that can be found on property from the former farm.

The fire tower provides stunning views, and on a clear day you can see Killington, Pico, and Mt. Ascutney to the south, Camels Hump and Mt. Mansfield to the north, Abraham Ellen and Lincoln to the west and the White Mountains in New Hampshire to the east. Now that’s impressive!

Allis State Park is the only staffed state park which offers free admission for day passes.

Camping is available with remote camping areas and lean tos. There is a great open pavilion, too, which can be rented out. It has electricity, restrooms, grills, fireplaces, picnic tables and can accommodate up to 100 people.

As a child, I loved making sand castles and spending time in nature during the summer. Luckily, there's so much to do in Vermont too - from hiking to going on a picnic to spending time at the beach. If you're interested in making and recapturing memories like these, we suggest spending the day at a state park frolicking in the water while the kids play. To start your fun-filled day trip at Lake Saint Catherine State Park, take VT 30-S if you're coming from Burlington.

Vermont is brimming with wonderful parks and I love checking them out! Today's spotlight shines on Lake Saint Catherine State Park in Poultney, a historic Vermont park. The 117-acre park is a top-notch site for all kinds of recreation, but not many people realize this gorgeous park was once a summer camp for boys. Let's check out this hidden gem park in VT:

The star of the show at this historic Vermont park is the beautiful Lake Saint Catherine. Enjoy a glorious day on the water here. A public boat launch gives access to those looking to fish or water ski. Anglers love the chance to land largemouth and smallmouth bass, rainbow and brown trout, yellow perch, and northern pike. Lake Saint Catherine State Park is open to day-use visitors as well as overnight campers.

Splash around in the crisp clear water or relax on the beach. Rentals of rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats are available to tour the lake. Before the park's opening as a swimming and picnic area in 1953, this location was once a summer camp for boys. Prior to the land's development as a camp, it was farmland as much of Vermont was in the beginning. As you explore this hidden gem park in VT, you'll find remnants of those past times.

Stop by the nature center for one of its regularly scheduled programs. A park interpreter is on site to conduct nature activities, hikes, crafts, and more. The park also has a concession stand and playground to keep the kids satisfied. It is truly one of the best VT parks to visit!
