Covered bridges and Vermont scenery go hand in hand. While spotting these bridges isn't rare, a covered bridge that once carried a train through certainly is! There are very few left standing in the US, and the Fisher Covered Railroad Bridge in Wolcot is a fine specimen to behold. While there isn't a much of a trail that takes you to this historic and now abandoned train tunnel in VT, there are plenty of places to explore both on and around the area. So, lace up those hiking boots and let's take a look at this fine bridge which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Fisher Covered Bridge is now closed, but it was the last covered bridge to carry railroad traffic in Vermont.
It is a rare surviving example in the state of a double Town lattice truss.
Built in 1908, this bridge carried the St. Johnsbury & Lamoille County railway over the Lamoille River.
It has a full length cupola which allowed the smoke from the steam locomotives out of the bridge.
Can you believe that this wonderful covered railroad bridge was scheduled for demolition in 1968?
Thankfully it was saved and strengthened by the addition of some steel reinforcement underneath.
The Fisher Covered Railroad Bridge is southeast of the village center of Wolcott, south of Vermont Route 15.
