If you've never heard of a slot canyon, listen up! Even if you have, you've never seen one like this. Buckskin Gulch is a slot canyon found near the Utah and Arizona Boarder near Kanab that you can hike through for over 15 miles, surrounded by the canyon's towering walls.
A permit is needed to hike through Buckskin Gulch, but don't let that deter you. This hike is truly incredible and you won't regret getting one. There are 4 access routes to Buckskin Gulch, the most popular one being Buckskin Trailhead.
Located in the middle of Kane County, Utah, Buckskin Gulch is hidden by the desert until you get up close. But, once you are inside the gulch, it is an experience unlike any other.
The trail transitions back and forth from quite narrow to relatively wide. Flash floods do occur here, so be sure to check the weather report.
Thought to be the longest slot canyon in the world, Buckskin Gulch is a tributary of the Pair River, which then feeds into the Colorado River. Being inside, it seems unbelievable that water carved this canyon out of rock over thousands of years.
In addition to the gulch, the rock formations along the way are also breathtaking. Be sure to bring a camera to remember all the exciting things you encounter along your trip.
Buckskin Gulch can be hiked in one day, but don't worry if you don't feel like walking the full 15 miles. The beauty of an out-and-back trail is that you can turn around at any time. Just be sure to walk far enough to appreciate this wonder that mother nature has left for us.
