Situated in the foothills of Salt Lake City, Red Butte Garden covers 100 acres on the campus of the University of Utah. It's the largest botanical garden in the Intermountain West, and a true gem for Utahns and visitors to enjoy. If you haven't strolled along its paths lately, it's time for a visit!
Red Butte Garden got its start as the State Arboretum in 1961, and it has continued to grow and develop ever since. The garden opened to the public in 1985, and it includes 21 acres of formal gardens and five miles of hiking trails.
Take a stroll through the pretty paths that link the formal gardens. Each one is dedicated to a theme.
Themed gardens include the Medicinal Garden, Rose Garden, Children's Garden, Four Seasons Garden, Herb Garden, Floral Walk, Wildflower Meadow, Fragrance Garden, Water Pavilion Garden, Water Conservation Garden, and more.
Surround yourself with fragrance in the rose garden, see what's blooming in the Fragrance Garden, and let the kids frolic in the Children's Garden.
The Water Pavilion Garden is a peaceful oasis with a pretty pond, waterfall, and pavilion so you can sit and enjoy the scenery.
The gardens each have benches, garden swings, and seating to encourage you to literally take time to stop and smell the flowers.
Since the garden is nestled high up in the foothills, you'll also get some incredible views of the mountains above and the valley below.
Stroll along the boardwalk in the Water Conservation Garden, and turn your attention to the west, where you'll see sweeping valley views.
The hiking trails above the formal gardens provide even more views!
The garden offers tours, classes, and other fun activities throughout the year. It's open seven days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last entry at 3:30 p.m..
Before your visit to the garden, make a reservation in advance on the garden's website.
