How would you like to take a short, fairly easy hike to see something absolutely beautiful? Sounds good, right? Now...are you willing to wake up and start hiking at 6:00 a.m.? If you are, you have a special treat in store!
Mesa Arch is located at Canyonlands National Park.
The arch is in the Sky Region of the park.
The Mesa Arch trail is a .7-mile trail that makes a loop to the arch and back. The trailhead starts and ends at the parking lot.
This hike is popular, so you'll find plenty of parking.
There are some pretty views along the way.
Please stay on the trail so you damage the cryptogamic soil here. It's a combination of moss, fungus and algae which helps prevent erosion, and also acts as a support system for other plants.
The trail is fairly easy, though there are a few steep spots.
Mesa Arch spans about 50 feet. It's perched on the very edge of an amazing canyon - it's about 500 feet to the valley below.
Mesa Arch is considered a "pothole arch" because it was formed by water pooling on the sandstone behind it.
Here's the view behind the arch.
The arch provides the perfect window to the valley and this sweeping vista.
Gorgeous, right?
