Here in Utah, you can explore red rocks, desert, beautiful lakes, and even tall mountains — we truly have it all! But, one unique hidden gem that often gets overlooked is the most remarkable, unusual canyon south of Vernal – Fantasy Canyon. A visit here is like a visit to another planet. There really isn’t anything like it in the Beehive State.
Located approximately 40 miles south of Vernal is Fantasy Canyon, a true hidden gem in Utah. This unique canyon is remarkable but often overshadowed by the more well-known national parks and canyons around the state.
Fantasy Canyon isn’t large. In fact, it’s only 10 acres. But while it may be small, it is certainly impressive.
This canyon is comprised of naturally-weathered sandstone and is located on what was once Lake Uinta, a large lake that covered hundreds of miles millions of years ago.
When the lake eventually dried up, erosion wore away the soft rock under the former lake, creating these magnificent rock formations.
To really get an up-close look at these formations and to explore the canyon, you’ll want to put on your hiking boots. There is a 0.5-mile loop trail where you can explore and let your imagination run wild.
While short, take your time exploring. You may just spot some well-known creatures formed in the rocks.
What type of creature do you see in the image above? Do you see a camel or something else?
This trail is easy and quite unusual. Just make sure to bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen as there is no shade. Also, there are no services in the area, so come prepared.
And while these formations have withstood thousands of years, it is crucial that you stay on the trail and you avoid the temptation to touch and climb on them. The formations are extremely fragile and can crumble very easily. Please be respectful so we can enjoy this area for years to come.
Your journey to Fantasy Canyon can be unforgettable. This is the perfect stop for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and more. You don't want to miss it.
