This Beautiful Boardwalk Trail In Utah Is The Most Unique Hike Around
The Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve in Layton offers an accessible boardwalk trail perfect for all visitors, featuring diverse environments and abundant wildlife.
You can spend an entire lifetime exploring the hiking trails in the Beehive State, but many require a certain amount of physical fitness to explore. Here's a boardwalk trail that's accessible to everyone. Take a look:
The Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve is a 4,400-acre oasis for migratory birds and wildlife.
The preserve in located in Layton. From I-15 take exit #330 (northbound) or #331 (southbound), then proceed to 3200 W.. The road goes from paved to dirt, and you'll follow it right to the end, where you'll find the entrance to the preserve.
The one-mile-long boardwalk is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs, and it's the perfect trail for just about everyone. This boardwalk stroll has full sun exposure, so it can get pretty hot during summer months. Make sure to bring plenty of water along, and wear a hat and sunscreen.
This incredible preserve contains a host of different environments, including salt marshes, freshwater marshes, mud flats, and dry upland meadows. Take in the gently waving grasses all around, the blue sky above, and the excellent view of the mountains on the horizon.
The marshes are teeming with wildlife, from frogs to ducks to a host of insects. Speaking of insects...you'll want to bring some mosquito repellant along.
It's located along a critical route for birds traveling south from Canada to Central and South America known as the Pacific Flyway. The preserve is so important to migration that it's one of just 17 "Sites of Hemispheric Importance" in the entire Western Hemisphere!
The Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve is free to visit, and it's open from dawn to dusk. The Visitor Center is open seven days a week. From April to September, stop in and say hello 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.. October through March, the Visitor Center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m..
Hike Snow Canyon State Park’s Scout Cave Trail in Utah for an Unforgettable Adventure
In my opinion, one of the best hikes in Utah is the Scout Cave Trail at Snow Canyon State Park. It's open all year, not super challenging, and showcases views that are almost too breathtaking to be real.
Utah is a nature lover's dream, and we're blessed with some of the best hiking trails in the country. It just doesn't get much better than our vast canyons and stunning rock formations. I could spend the rest of my life hiking in the Beehive State and still get excited about hitting the trail each day! In my opinion, one of the best hikes in Utah is the Scout Cave Trail at Snow Canyon State Park. It's open all year, not super challenging, and showcases views that are almost too breathtaking to be real. Plus, it's kid and pet-friendly!
Scout Cave Trail is a 3.4-mile out-and-back hike that passes over lava flow fields, Navajo Sandstone rocks, and stream beds. Although it's rated as intermediate on AllTrails, most hikers describe it as being easy, so you definitely don't need to be super skilled. The elevation gain is about 350 feet, and just a few moderate climbing sections make up the bulk of it. You're unlikely to get lost because the trail is very well-marked, and the variation in terrain makes for an interesting adventure from start to finish.
By far the coolest part of the trail (and the main reason anyone hikes it in the first place) is Scout Cave. It's located right before the turnaround point and showcases unbelievable panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the city below. You can actually go inside the cave, which makes this trail a favorite among kiddos.
Shade is minimal, so if you're visiting in the summer, you'll definitely want to wear a hat and load up on sunscreen. Getting started early in the morning also helps with the temperature issue - although the views at sunset are equally as mesmerizing. You should also bring plenty of water and a snack or two, and make sure you have durable footwear for the rock scrambling sections of the trail (however brief they may be).

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
