Utah is no stranger to ghosts and paranormal activity. In fact, we created an entire road trip to visit some of these spooky locations. However, there is one haunted hiking trail in Utah County that is often overlooked and forgotten but super spooky — Rock Canyon Trail. As you explore this trail, be prepared for a creepy experience. Many hikers claim to have seen and heard disturbing and unexplainable things as they’ve explored this area. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the Rock Canyon Trail is definitely one of the creepiest hikes in Utah.
At first glance, the Rock Canyon Trail is mesmerizing. This hiking trail in Utah is near Provo's largest city park, Rock Canyon Park.
This is a 5.7-mile, out-and-back trail that is rated moderate. Be prepared for a bit of a climb and some rocky terrain to trek across.
This is certainly a beautiful trail no matter the time of year that you explore it. There are gorgeous trees you’ll walk through, the mountain views are enchanting, and the bridges and other features you’ll cross are picturesque.
However, despite the beauty of the area, Rock Canyon Trail is believed to be haunted.
This canyon is believed to be haunted by multiple spirits and many of these sightings are reported during poor weather.
Some hikers have reported seeing a man dressed in clothing from the 1970s running down the trail and then suddenly disappearing. Others have heard footsteps behind them, but when they turn around, nothing is there.
Several hikers have also reported hearing a woman crying and multiple screams in the canyon.
Some believe the crying is the wife of Chief Pareyart. During the 1850s, when the pioneers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began moving into the area, there was a clash between the Ute people in the area and the pioneers. Unfortunately, a battle broke out between the two groups of people, which was known as the Battle of Fort Utah. Dozens of Native Americans were killed during the battle, including Chief Pareyart’s wife who died in the canyon.
There have also been sightings of a small girl playing on the rocks and in the river. As you approach, however, she disappears.
