We're lucky to live in the most beautiful state in the nation, and a hike to Ensign Peak just confirms that Utah is the place to be. With sweeping views of Salt Lake City below, Ensign Peak has a lot to offer, and the hike is less than a half mile each way.
Your adventure starts at Ensign Peak Nature Park, located north of the Capitol Building off Ensign Vista Drive.
The short trail is an easy stroll for most hikers. You'll make your way along the level dirt path up the side of the mountain. The elevation climb is gentle - just 374 feet.
Your pup is welcome to join you on this hike! Please just make sure to keep him on leash and bring some bags to clean up after him.
During spring and summer months, you'll see wildflowers along the trail. Make sure to stay on the path; the city is trying to regenerate the vegetation up here to combat erosion.
You'll soon reach the summit, which offers expansive valley views below!
From your perch at Ensign Peak, you can see downtown Salt Lake City and the Salt Lake Valley stretching far out in the distance. The Wasatch Mountains provide a pretty backdrop, too.
This peak also has historic significance. Just a few days after reaching the Salt Lake Valley, Brigham Young and a small group of other pioneers climbed this peak to survey the valley below. They planned out the city from this vantage point.
Imagine what this place must have looked like before the streets and buildings were built.
Make sure to bring a camera along to capture this birds-eye view of the city. Enjoy this trail year-round!
