Fall foliage peaks a little later here in Texas than most other states, but it's well worth the wait. Atlanta State Park, hiding far up in the Northeastern corner of the Panhandle, puts on a spectacular show every year, and the leaves should be fully changed in about a month.
Situated on the shores of Wright Patman Lake, Atlanta State Park is a hidden gem in far northeastern Texas. Towering pines and hardwoods offer a sense of seclusion, while activities such as fishing, hiking, camping, and birding keep the whole family entertained.
For much of the year, the trees lining this this nearly 34,000-acre reservoir are green as can be. 75-pound catfish attract fishermen in droves, and swimmers enjoy splashing around in the pristine water.
Upon the arrival of autumn, it's hard to believe this is the very same foliage from just a season prior. A once monotonous landscape now erupts in warm red, brown, and amber hues guaranteed to put a twinkle in your eye.
4.8 miles of nature trails meander through the grounds, leading straight past all the most scenic areas. The terrain isn't rough or steep in any aspect, so a wide range of skill levels can enjoy a truly unforgettable adventure.
As you weave progressively deeper into the forest grove, be on the lookout for turkeys, pelicans, and even the heavily protected bald eagle. It's truly amazing how much rare and exotic wildlife thrives far away from any human involvement, not to mention the unparalleled beauty of our national bird flying amidst golden leaves.
Feel the leaves crunch beneath your feet as an entire year of growth sheds to make room for new beginnings. Listen to the distinct sound of pine warblers chirping their hellos from high up in the 90-foot treetops.
Gazing skyward reveals a convergence of shades that make you feel like cozying up by the fireplace with some piping hot apple cider. A cool breeze sways the branches to and fro as their leaves rustle peacefully.
Even as you bid the park farewell, breathtaking fall colors line every inch of the roadway. Be sure and take lots of pictures to remember your visit by!
