This charming creek in Austin is an underrated places to spend a summer afternoon. With gurgling water, shady shores, and a trail that will take you to the best parts of the area, there’s nothing not to love about Bull Creek. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting.
Bull Creek is a small tributary of the Colorado River that originates in Texas Hill Country. The creek passes through some of the prettiest areas in the Austin region and is home gorgeous ashe juniper, oak, and mesquite. It’s also bordered by areas of the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge.
There are lovely parks and hiking trails along the banks of Bull Creek, and the Bull Creek Greenbelt Trail is one of the best. It’s a 2.9-mile lightly trafficked loop path that is great for all skill levels and is dog-friendly.
This trail offers numerous swimming and wading opportunities if you feel like cooling off, and the water is usually quite slow-moving and shallow. There are plenty of small critters and plants to discover along the creek banks as well, making this spot perfect for a budding naturalist or angler.
The banks along Bull Creek can be rather muddy after a rainstorm, so come prepared with sturdy shoes and plenty of sunscreen. Dogs are welcome at the creek, and there are restrooms at the beginning, middle, and end of the greenbelt. You’ll also be able to access water fountains.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. Sweltering temperatures in Austin mean one thing: It's time to make a splash. These swimming holes near Austin make hot temperatures so much better -- especially for those of you visiting our hot and sunny state. We may not be super close to any larger bodies of water like the ocean, but freshwater swimming is just as fine. You can find us exploring these waters throughout the year, as long as it's warm outside!

Jacob's Well is about 45 minutes outside of Austin and is an artesian spring. Looks scary, but it is a very popular chill spot.
