Let's face it - a large part of Texas is pretty boring to drive through. I've lived in Southeast Texas all my life, and when my family and I take road trips, I've resorted to occupying myself with activities other than looking out the window and taking in the scenery. But I don't see the monotonous land as a negative thing; it just makes me appreciate the truly beautiful sights when they appear. The hill country and West Texas are full of spots that will leave you in absolute awe of the beauty of our state. Here are six scenic overlooks that are particularly breathtaking:
1. TX 207, 10 miles south of Claude
This portion of Highway 207 runs straight through Palo Duro Canyon. You don't have to traipse around in the heat to enjoy the beautiful view; driving by and looking out over the beautiful red rocks will bring chills down your spine just the same.
2. Big Bend National Park, South Rim Trail
Although every trail in the park is absolutely enchanting, this one is by far the overall favorite because it takes hikers as close to the mountains' edge as safely possible and allows the incredible scene of endless peaks and valleys to open up before your eyes.
3. US 90, between Comstock and Langtry
This section of Highway 90 takes you through the Pecos River High Bridge overlook, where you'll see an unforgettable view of the bridge and rushing river underneath. Leading up to it, as in the picture above, you'll drive on winding roads through the rolling hills with plenty of lush greenery surrounding you. A beautiful sight if I've ever seen one.
4. FM 170
Otherwise known as River Road, this stretch of FM 170, between Presidio and Study Butte, parallels the Rio Grande that's carved its way through the surrounding mountains. The view is just spectacular.
5. 1-10, El Paso
No way I could neglect another of our majestic mountain ranges in Texas: the Franklin Mountains. If you travel on I-10 through El Paso until it meets US 54, you'll drive right underneath the towering peaks.
6. Texas 124, High Island
We'll take a little break from mountains now (although I could stare at them all day and not get tired of it) to appreciate the water. If you're from Southeast Texas like me, you've probably driven through High Island many times on the way to Galveston. It might seem monotonous, but there really is a lot of beauty to be found in the waves crashing into the sandbar - the only noise that can be heard as you travel the long, lonely road.
Have you looked out over one of these spots? Where are some other beautiful scenic overlooks in Texas?
