If you think you've discovered all the hidden swimming holes in Texas, I'm willing to bet you don't know about Boykin Springs Lake in Zavalla. This secluded oasis is nestled in one of our state's four lush national forests, and it's an idyllic spot to take a dip on a hot summer day. Complete with campgrounds, a waterfall, and the Sawmill Hiking Trail, which leads to the ruins of a turn-of-the-century sawmill, Boykin Springs will quickly become one of your new favorite summer destinations.
Nestled within the dense and rugged Angelina National Forest in deep East Texas lies Boykin Springs Recreation Area. Locals have been coming here to camp, hike, fish, and swim for decades, but the area is still largely unknown across much of the state.
Boykin Springs Lake is one of the main attractions in the recreation area. Boasting a sandy beach and cool, spring-fed waters, this refreshing oasis is perfect for a summer dip.
I live just a few hours from Boykin Springs, so I've been swimming here for as long as I can remember, and it never gets old. Every year, I eagerly anticipate immersing myself in the refreshing lake waters, knowing I'll feel brand new by the end of my trip.
Since the lake is tucked away so deep inside of a forest, it feels very remote and secluded. Combine that with the minimal crowds and virtually no noise pollution, and you have your own little slice of paradise.
Visitors also love to walk along the creek that feeds into the lake. There are several other swimming spots to splash around in on the trail, as well as a small (yet undeniably beautiful) waterfall that cascades down over a series of rocks.
Once you've had your fill of water time, the Sawmill Hiking Trail is a can't-miss attraction while you're here. It leads to the ruins of an old sawmill, and the whole experience is equal parts eerie and thrilling.
You are also welcome to camp out overnight if one day just isn't enough time. There are 14 locations for tents or RVs (up to 24 feet long), plus three tent-only sites and a historic CCC picnic shelter that accommodates 74 people.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Explore One of Texas’ Cleanest Lakes at Rockledge Park
Nestled along the shores of beautiful Lake Grapevine - one of the clearest lakes in Texas - this urban oasis showcases pristine waters, lush greenery, native wildlife, and stellar sunsets.
It always makes me laugh when people from other states think Texas is nothing but dusty roads with tumbleweeds and riders on horseback. Of course, there are parts of the Lone Star State that live up to the stereotype, but Texas is just so big that it’s hard to make blanket statements. That being said, one of my favorite things about our state is how much variation exists in its landscape. From deserts to beaches and prairies to wetlands, Texas has a little bit of everything. If you’re someone who loves the water as much as I do, you have to check out the North Shore Trail to Rockledge Park in Grapevine. Nestled along the shores of beautiful Lake Grapevine - one of the clearest lakes in Texas - this urban oasis showcases pristine waters, lush greenery, native wildlife, and stellar sunsets.
The trail is rather long, at nearly eight miles, but it has an elevation gain of under 400 feet, so don’t let the distance keep you away. While the lake is the main attraction, the rest of the trail doesn’t disappoint, boasting tall green grass dotted with seasonal wildflowers, dense forests, and even native wildlife such as deer.
The sections of the trail that do open up to the lake are simply breathtaking. Even from relatively far away, you can tell just how crystal-clear the water is.
As if we needed another reason to fall in love with this loop, it also features a small stream that meanders its way through moss-covered rocks and the gnarled roots of old, majestic trees. You’ll feel like you’ve entered a fairytale when you listen to the rhythmic sound of the gently babbling brook and the melodic tweets of birds chirping in the forest canopy above.
The trail is beautiful to visit year-round, but I prefer it in the fall and winter. Somehow, the lake is even more beautiful in the haunting stillness of the cooler months of the year. No matter what season you choose to come, there are several benches where you can sit and relax as you revel in the immense natural beauty that surrounds you.
