As a lifelong resident of Southeast Texas, I’ve experienced my fair share of long, hot summers. While I’m used to the heat by now, I certainly don’t look forward to it, and I make it a point to spend as much of the season in the water as possible. I love waterparks, but I don’t love baking while I wait in line for the rides. Fortunately, there’s a better option: a natural waterpark in Texas! On the South Llano River sits Boone’s Crossing, a stretch of waterway with rocks that form natural waterslides and pools perfect for a day of fun in the sun.
Man-made waterparks are cool and all, but nature has plenty of her own, too! One of my favorites is known by locals as Boone’s Crossing, located on the beautiful Llano River in Junction, Texas.
South Llano River State Park boasts two miles of river frontage, and it even rents out tubes. You can either put in at one of the designated launch sites, or bring your own tube, canoe, or kayak and enter wherever you like.
The river does have some rapids, but overall, it’s kid-friendly. Families especially love the areas where rocks create natural pools and even slides! It’s a safe, fun, and low-key way to spend a day on the water.
If you don’t have your own canoe or kayak, consider renting one from an outfitter like South Llano River Canoes & Kayaks. You can read all about their float trips on their Facebook page.
You can spend the night at the state park if you’re in the mood for a longer trip. It has tent/RV sites and cabins, plus several beautiful hiking trails to explore. Plus, the night skies are spectacular!
So if your summer adventures have been feeling a bit stale, I highly recommend a trip to Boone’s Crossing. Not only is the water absolutely beautiful, but you can also reap the benefits of a waterpark for a fraction of the cost!
