One of the best state parks in Texas is tucked away just an hour north of the bustling DFW metro. Ray Roberts Lake State Park is spread across nine separate units, offering a peaceful waterfront escape without straying too far from the city. Portions of the park are well-known and popular, but the majority of the units remain hidden gems. No matter how you decide to explore this vast natural playground, you’ll never forget your visit.
Just an hour north of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro lies a sweet escape by the name of Ray Roberts Lake State Park. Split into nine separate units, the park spans nearly 4,000 acres, making it the ultimate outdoor playground.
From swimming at white sand beaches to hiking the 20-mile multiuse Greenbelt Corridor, there's so much to see and do here. The 29,000-acre lake is also a prime fishing spot where largemouth bass, crappie, white bass and catfish abound.
While the three main units of the park (Johnson Branch, Isle du Bois, and Greenbelt) are quite popular, the others aren't nearly as crowded. You'll practically have them all to yourself!
About half of the Greenbelt Corridor is accessible to horseback riders, while the remaining half is for hiking and biking only. The Johnson Branch and Isle du Bois units also have trails, and some of them are paved.
Visitors to the Greenbelt Unit can explore the Trinity River on a tranquil paddling trip. Surrounded by lush greenery, this pristine river never stops flowing since the lake is dammed.
Three of the park's units - Johnson Branch, Isle du Bois, and Jordan - offer overnight facilities, including tent and RV sites...
...and a beautiful lodge with an on-site marina where you can rent boat slips. If you do opt for a campsite, the Jordan Unit is definitely the most secluded of the three.
