You've probably heard of Barton Springs Pool in Austin, but did you know there's another spring-fed oasis right nearby? Deep Eddy Pool is the oldest swimming pool in Texas, and it's the perfect place to make a splash this summer.
The oldest swimming pool in Texas, Deep Eddy Pool opened to the public in July of 1936.
You'll find it on Deep Eddy Avenue in Austin.
Originally, the pool was nothing more than a spring-fed swimming hole in the Colorado River.
In 1915, it became the centerpiece of a resort, the Deep Eddy Bathing Beach, which featured cabins, a zip line, slide, Ferris wheel, and even a diving board for horses!
1935 is when the City of Austin purchased the property for $10,000.
The following year, the pool opened as a public park and playground, and finally earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
Today, the pool is popular among adults and children, divided equally into a lap section and shallow wading area.
Fed with clear, cold water from two wells, the pool is unchlorinated and has an average temperature between 66 and 75 degrees.
Hours for the wading pool are 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. from March 14 through October 31, while the lap area is open during daylight hours year-round.
In the summer, the pool sponsors Splash Party Movie Nights, an event that consists of family films shown on a poolside inflatable movie screen.
You can even enjoy the onsite bathhouse, which was part of the resort before closing to the public for many years.
It was restored to its original condition in 2002 by The Friends of Deep Eddy, a non-profit association of swimmers and other parks advocates.
Address: 401 Deep Eddy Avenue, Austin, TX 78703.
