When it comes to dark sky parks in Texas, none compare to Big Bend Ranch State Park. This far West Texas gem boasts some of the darkest night skies on earth, and its vast and rugged landscape will take you lightyears away from the fast-paced modern world.
Did you know one of the best dark sky parks in Texas also happens to be our largest state park? Welcome to Big Bend Ranch, where the stars are big and bright and the potential for adventure is boundless.
Straddling the U.S.-Mexico border in the remote West Texas desert, Big Bend Ranch State Park sits on over 300,000 acres of virtually untouched land. There are 238 miles of multiuse trails to explore, plus an additional 70 miles of unmaintained dirt roads.
Visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, as well as rafting and fishing on the beautiful Rio Grande.
The park is known for several things, including a barrage of unique rock formations known as hoodoos.
Big Bend Ranch is also rife with fascinating history. You can see and tour an old fort, and the former ranch owner's home is still intact on the property (and surprisingly well-maintained).
As if the park didn't have enough redeeming qualities already, it also boasts some of the darkest skies on earth.
Officially designated as an International Dark Sky Park in 2017, Big Bend Ranch is the only "Class 1" park in Texas, meaning there isn't a single other park in the state with darker skies.
With such unparalleled stargazing opportunities, camping here is a dream. There are plenty of primitive sites to choose from, as well as additional bunkhouse lodging.
