Anyone who's been to West Texas can tell you all about the undeniable mystique of the mountainous desert landscape. The region is brimming with unique geological formations, and Big Bend Ranch State Park near Presidio has some of the most incredible rocks you've ever seen. Hop on one of many hiking trails in the park and check them out!
Spanning over 300,000 acres, Big Bend Ranch State Park is the largest state park in Texas. Getting there requires a long, winding drive through the Chihuahuan Desert, each mile plunging you deeper into the desolate, rugged landscape.
The park boasts many noteworthy features, among them being Madrid Falls, the second-highest waterfall in the state. Other points of interest include diverse wildlife and vegetation, 23 miles of Rio Grande frontage, and unique geological formations such as the nearly 5,000-foot Solitario Peak.
Visitors can embark on over 238 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails that vary in length and difficulty. Most are primitive, with few signs to guide you along the way, so make sure to have a map handy.
Prevailing across all the trails are hoodoos, or thin pillars of weathered rock extending up from the desert floor. You'll often see large boulders balancing atop the spindly formations, sometimes in ways that seem to defy the laws of physics.
Forged by the elements eons ago, these ancient landforms promise to leave all who behold them in a state of pure awe. Nature is truly amazing!
Trails range in length and difficulty levels vary. Visitors can also explore 70 miles of unpaved dirt roads in high-clearance, 4WD vehicles.
Have you seen the hoodoos at Big Bend Ranch State Park? They're perfectly imperfect, each groove and marking a chapter in the fascinating story of how the mystical West Texas landscape came to be.
