A springtime hike in Tennessee is a bit like searching for buried treasure. Allow me to explain: when I was a kid, my dad told me he buried a mason jar filled with rare coins in the woods. I spent days and days searching the forest attempting to follow the clues he gave me. To my disappointment, I never found a jar full of money. However, one thing you can do while searching through the woods of Tennessee in the spring is find a variety of wildflowers, which, if you ask me, is the best kind of reward.
Today I want to take you to the beautiful Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park for our adventure. You’ll find this park in West Tennessee located just North of Memphis alongside the Mississippi River.
The Pioneer Springs Trail is fairly flat with under 300 feet of elevation gain, which gives this nearly five-mile trail an "easy" rating. A gentle stroll through the forest will have you meandering near the Poplar Tree Lake to start and soon you will find yourself surrounded by lush greenery.
Before you know it you will arrive at the spring. Preserving not only the natural world but also our history is something that the park system in Tennessee does very well.
Most people will stop at the spring and turn around; however, you can continue further into the woods on the Chickasaw Bluffs Trail.
During the spring, this trail is especially delightful due to the variety of wildflowers you can find along the way.
These sections of the forest are like searching for treasure as you feast your eyes on a brilliant sea of colors from purples to whites to yellows to blues.
If you learn to slow down a bit then there is a world of activities happening all around us and that is very much true when it comes to wildflowers. Take a light pace, enjoy the colors, and see how many flowers you can find.
