In my opinion, summer in Tennessee is all about melting in the hot sun until you simply can’t take it anymore, then finding the nearest source of water to plunge yourself in to cool off. So once you get to the point where you need to find water -- and find it fast -- it’s always helpful to have a couple of places saved in the back of your mind. That way, you can just hop in your car and get there before you melt away! That’s where we come in; we are going to point you in the right direction to Blue Hole, a refreshing swimming hole in Tennessee.
Blue Hole is located in Savage Gulf State Park and is a hidden oasis within the surrounding mountains and a great place to go for a dip. The pristine setting is perfect to just place your feet in to cool off... or if you prefer, to dunk all the way under.
The name comes from the brilliant blue color of the water found in the swimming area.
If you have been around Tennessee for a while then you might also know of another popular swimming hole called Blue Hole Falls. This popular area for summertime *also* offers crystal-clear and sapphire-blue waters.
At one end of the swimming area, water pours in and the rocks descend like stairs creating a beautiful cascade. Depending on the recent rainfall, the water might give way to a mighty rush, making for a wild and spectacular scene.
Most of the time, however, the water gently flows down the rocks creating a peaceful backdrop for you to enjoy while floating in the water.
At the trailhead, you will have the opportunity to go either right to Blue Hole or left to Greeter Falls.
Greeter Falls is a beautiful waterfall and another popular swimming area in Tennessee; however, this place can get crowded on a hot summer day, so if you are looking for some solitude, your best bet is to turn right and head to Blue Hole. This trail takes you a little over a mile with about 100 feet of elevation gain. I have seen both falls before -- and they are each definitely worth exploring, so I highly recommend allowing yourself the time to see both on the same day.

Blue Hole is a great place to go swimming on a warm summer day, but don’t let that stop you from going the rest of the year. This spot can be beautiful all year long.
