The state of Tennessee is striped with stunning hiking trails from the banks of the Mississippi River to the west and the peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains to the east. Ramsey Cascades Trail is located in the mountains, and it remains one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes in the area. We would recommend getting ready for an intense trek through some of the best-preserved wilderness in the state, and make sure you bring your water bottle! You are going to be on the trail for quite some time. If you’re ready for a challenge with a big payoff, then you may want to plan a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
The Ramsey Cascades is the tallest waterfall in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the falls drop water over a staggering 100 feet. If you choose to hike the Ramsey Cascades Trail you will not only enjoy the beauty of the falls but also miles of old-growth forests.
Be prepared to gain over 2000 feet in elevation, with an average of 548 feet of elevation gain per mile. That’s a difficult trail! The out-and-back hike features a stunning amount of natural scenery and visitors rave about the beauty of its rocky outcroppings and streams.
Keep your eye out for the small footbridge that crosses a stream along the way. It’s one of the most photographed parts of the hike and remains a beautiful, enchanting enclave. The trail is rugged, so this small moment of peace is well worth its salt.
Visitors recommend wearing hiking boots as opposed to sneakers due to certain stretches of streams and rocks, and you can expect the entire trip to take a half-day to complete. That depends on how quickly you’re walking, of course, and how many breaks you choose to take. Dogs are not allowed on the trail.
You will get to see Ramsey Cascades itself, the tallest waterfall in the Great Smoky Mountains, and one of the most beautiful. The hike through the forest leads you to a stunning moment of awe, and you can expect to see the falls halfway through your hike.
Just look at that gorgeous sight!
If you haven't hiked to the Ramsey Cascades, then a beautiful experience awaits. The trail is stunning, and the memories are forever.
