Summer in Tennessee can be hot, humid, and, frankly, a bit overbearing! When the sun starts beating down, it's time to catch some rays and head to the beach. That might be a problem here in Tennessee if you don’t know where to look. We may be landlocked here in the Volunteer State, but we have our own version of paradise. You won’t be finding any palm trees gently swaying in the breeze, but take one step onto Rock Island beach and you won’t miss them. Not only is it a great place to spend the day in the sun, but this Tennessee State Park is filled with fun activities.
If you are anything like me, when you hear "Rock Island State Park," the first thing that comes to mind is Twin Falls.
It’s such an iconic waterfall how could you not? This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the whole state and you can certainly venture out to see this stunning natural wonder. However, today we are talking about something completely different located in the park.
Locals know that the beach on the north side of the park is one of the best places in Rock Island State Park on a hot summer day.
The clean, soft sand leads right into the water so you can easily cool off, but if you want to play the role of the beach bum? You can do that, too -- just don’t forget to bring your sunscreen!
This is also a popular spot to put in your kayak and head on down the river.
This is one of the most magical places to paddle in the state. You will smoothly glide over the water and work your way down the river to witness more waterfalls than you can count flowing from the rock face.
The soft sand is great to play in, build a sand castle, or construct an epic sculpture. You will be having so much fun that you will forget all about the salty air of the coast!
This Tennessee beach is well-maintained and optimized for sandy enjoyment.
I suggest you take some time to hike and explore the rest of the park but whatever you do, don’t dismiss this beautiful area before you leave the park!
Finding a beach in Tennessee seems like an oxymoron but when you know where to look you can find some pretty amazing places. The Rock Island beach is the perfect example of what is out there if you know where to look. For more information about the park please visit the Rock Island State Park website.
Looking to make good use of another beach in Tennessee? Head out East where you can find my favorite lake in the whole state: Watauga Lake.
