We love a good ghost story, whether it's Christmastime or smack dab in the middle of July. Whether we're getting ready for Halloween or stuffing turkeys, there's no time of year that's rough for a ghost story - and here in Nashville? We have one of the most epic ghost stories in the United States. Adams, Tennessee is the home of the historic Bell Witch Cave, a place that hides a story so weird and gruesome that even the best of us turn pale.

The Bell Witch Cave is located in Adams, roughly thirty minutes outside of Nashville, Tennessee. The property is said to be haunted by one of the most wicked and notorious spirits in American folklore: The Bell Witch. (We know, we know - super original.)

John Bell and his family moved to the property in the early 1800s, hoping to start a new life on their gorgeous Tennessee farm. Everything started off well and good - until 1817. It was then that the family began to hear terrifying wails in the house and around the farm, the eerie sounds of chains dragging across the floor kept them up at night.

Some even say that family members were choked in the night by this terrifying spirit. John Bell himself is said to have to murdered by the witch. Historically, he died of an inexplicable poisoning - but the Bell family tells a different story. He was poisoned, by a spirit filled with darkness and hatred. A spirit that may still haunt the farm, even today.

The witch makes her home on the property cave, and the family-owned space offers up tours that point out highlights of the haunting as you wander through the dark. You may even feel the breath of a spirit...even though the cave is about 500 feet long. Short though it may be, the story of the Bell Witch turns 200 this year - and there's a reason it hasn't petered out over time. Her spirit is still here.

Tours will set you back $12, and are offered on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year. You'll want to make sure you check with their ever-changing event calendar to stay up on current events, though! There are always neat opportunities for tours around Halloween and in the summertime, and you won't want to miss out.
