Sunflower fields have an air of majesty and supreme beauty about them. They're stunning displays of natures' true colors, where you can truly experience Mother Earth showing off. Out here in Tennessee, we have a few tricks up our sleeves when it comes to this summertime phenomenon, and you're bound to fall in love with a tiny farm out in Murfreesboro. Care to explore?
Batey Farms outside of Murfreesboro has been in the Batey family for 8 generations and over 200 years. The farm as a business specializes in sausage and pork products, but every summer, their sunflower fields are the real star of the show.
The fields are in bloom every summer, usually for the whole month of July plus or minus a week. The farm is a fully functioning farm, so hours vary depending on everything going on at the farm.
This is more than just a few sunflowers. According to owner Brandon Whitt, the field spans 36 acres and exactly 874,290 sunflower seeds. But who's counting?
As if seeing the beautiful sunflowers wasn’t enough -- Batey Farms uses them to give back to the community. The Farm encourages visitors taking pictures to donate to the local food bank.
You might be wondering what happens to the flowers after the season is over. It turns out the Farm eventually harvests them and sells them to local florists and seed companies. So, you might have had their flowers in your house without knowing!
Not around for the sunflower bloom in July? Be sure to check out some of the other seasonal activities the farm offers. They have corn mazes in the Fall and berry picking in the Spring for folks to come out and enjoy some simple farm life.
The sunflowers are located at 5331 Baker Road in Murfreesboro, and in 2016, the farm started allowing guests to pick their own sunflowers for $1.00 per flower. Otherwise, admission is free, but like we mentioned earlier, a donation to the food bank is always appreciated.
