When I search for a great hike in Tennessee, I am looking for a certain wow factor, and that is precisely what I found at the Johnson Ridge Small Wild Area. What at first glance seems like a simple hike on the shoreline of a lake unravels into a mysterious adventure far more than what one would expect. Not many people have heard of this trail, but you will soon fall in love with the otherworldly rocks and boulders found along this hidden gem hike in Tennessee.
The Johnson Ridge Trail will take you on a loop hike around the relatively small natural area of only 100 acres. The hike is fairly level and at length, you will travel just under two miles through the forest, wetlands, and by the water.
This is a great spot for shoreline fishing. Since the trail is a much lesser-known hike in the area, you should have a fair amount of solitude. You may even have the whole place to yourself, so in the quiet make sure to watch for wildlife. Deer, turtles, and bald eagles have all been spotted in the area.
There is something so peaceful about a lakeside hike. I love chasing waterfalls and standing on a mountaintop, but the simplicity of a quiet waterside walk is tough to beat. You can easily sit along the beach and gaze out upon the sparkling waters of the Cherokee Reservoir. The mesmerizing ebb and flow of the water puts me in a trance as the sun plays with the calming ripples, making the lake glisten like there are thousands of diamonds floating on the surface.
What catches my attention more than the familiar cadence of the water, though, are the rather odd rock formations along the shoreline. At first, these smooth stones look like the far-reaching roots of a mighty tree, but upon closer inspection, they are indeed rocks.
These otherworldly boulders steal the show for points of interest on this trail. I love it when you find something on a hike that just seems out of place. It could be a surviving flower in the bleakness of winter, or a plant that doesn't normally grow in the area -- whatever it may be can be a fun change of pace.
Interestingly enough, these rocks remind me of the red rocks found in Utah and all throughout the deserts of the West. Some of them stand up like mini mesas and others still are molded and shaped in strange smooth patterns. Looking from a distance, they almost appear to be the bones of a long-lost ancient creature dug up from the earth's crust. This is certainly a highlight of this hike and something that should not be overlooked.
Between the calm waters and otherworldly rocks and boulders, this hike is one of the greatest hidden gem trails in Tennessee! Head on over to Johnson Ridge Small Wild Area, and make sure you have the AllTrails app. If you download the Johnson Ridge Trail you can track your progress. This is one of those great finds that almost no one knows about so make sure you get outside and adventure a little bit to find it. Happy adventures, nature lovers!
