Laurel Hill Wildlife Management Area is definitely what I would call a hidden gem. This beautiful nature spot is remote, but that doesn’t make it any less worthy of the spotlight. I have learned that in our great state, everywhere you look there are amazing treasures to discover. What might seem like a simple Tennessee hike is actually an incredible trail filled with adventure. Let's take a look at this delightful hike at Laurel Hill Wildlife Management Area:
Laurel Hill is a nearly eight-mile-long trail that, upon first glance, might just seem like a simple dirt road -- but this area is designed for the heart of an explorer.
The trail is first and foremost designed for horseback riding and if you have a horse then you should certainly take your beloved beast out for a walk through this rolling nature spot.
However, If you choose to go on foot rather than hoof, this is where the real fun begins. Now this trail isn’t going to be for everyone, but if you are willing to get a little bit wet and know how to enjoy the simple pleasures waiting to be discovered, you will be perfectly suited for this wild wilderness.
Here are a few things you can expect to find along the trail. Get ready to pick your jaw up off the ground as you arrive at Laurel Hill Lake. This pristine blue body of water glistens and sparkles in the sunlight and is a great place to stop for a snack break. Sit by the shore and just soak in the stunning scenery before heading back into the forest.
The trickling water is a sound I am all too familiar with here in Tennessee and is a tone I am very fond of. I love to hear the water moving as I hike; that, along with the singing birds, make the forest come alive in an ebb and flow of sound found in the wilderness. You can expect many moments of solitude as you marvel at the music of the forest.
The water also is where you will find the challenge. If you are up for it, you will have to get your feet wet, and possibly more than that if there has been heavy rain. Depending on the water level you will have to trudge across the cool water, which can be quite a delight in the heat of the summer.
Keep your eye out for wildlife while you travel through the woods; this is one of the great joys of discovery every time you take to the trail. You are bound to find something in this remote location but just what and where is part of the spontaneous fun. This area is known to have large groups of Armadillos so keep your eyes peeled for these lovely armored mammals.
You never know what kind of animals you may come across in the Laurel Hill Wildlife Management Area, but you will always find adventure. From river crossings to peaceful lakes, this hike in Laurel Hill Wildlife Management Area has a lot to offer those who are willing to put in the work for the sake of the journey.
