It's no question that Mount Rushmore is the top attraction in South Dakota (it is nicknamed the Mount Rushmore State, after all), and while it is awesome, it is a little lacking in some places. As far as an outdoor attraction that you can get up close, personal, and hands-on with, there are none that tops this animal park that is actually right near the great monument itself: the Reptile Gardens.
This is more than just a zoo or garden, it is an experience like no other. Even if you don't find yourself to be a fan of reptiles, anyone of all ages can enjoy this place. It's been around for as long as Mount Rushmore and will continue to delight visitors for years ahead.
The Reptile Gardens claims the Guinness Book of World Records title of World's Largest Reptile Zoo.
But it's more than just a zoo - their botanical gardens fill the park with beauty.
Among these plants, of course, you can find the animals it is so famed for.
Get up close and personal to giant tortoises, hold a baby alligator or see giant crocodiles from a more safe distance. Snakes, lizards, turtles, and just about every other reptile can be found here.
There's more than just reptiles, too. Exotic birds like parrots and eagles can be viewed here.
Even prairie dogs have a little town here that you can see closer than ever in one of the glass domes popping up into the exhibit you can stand in.
Their facilities also have fossils and plenty of opportunities to learn about these creatures.
From the gorgeous landscaping to the things you will learn about the amazing animals kept here, this place is a must visit!
