There's nothing like spending the day at one of South Dakota's beautiful lakes, but this one mountain lake is quite possibly the most incredible in the entire state. If you're ready for a day of adventure check this out!
Nestled in the Black Hills, Sylvan Lake is a little gem at Custer State Park.
In late spring, the entire area is covered in brightly-colored wildflowers.
The rock formations surrounding the lake are so distinctive that most South Dakotans instantly recognize Sylvan Lake when they see photos of it.
The surface area of the lake is 17.3 acres, and with an average depth of 12 feet, it's perfect for boating, swimming and fishing.
On a calm day, the lake is like glass and it's the most picturesque scene you'll ever witness.
On a stormy day, Sylan Lake is even more awe-inspiring.
Bring a picnic lunch when you visit. Your sandwich will taste even better when enjoyed in this scenic place.
You'll likely meet a few of the lake's residents during your visit.
One of the best ways to explore Sylvan Lake? Take the Sylvan Lake Loop Trail, which circles around the entire lake.
The trail is just over one mile long, and suitable for most hikers. During the hike, you'll see a waterfall, rock formations and even this staircase, where you'll squeeze right through a crevice, underneath some huge boulders.
Put your canoe or kayak out on the lake to get an even closer view.
On a warm, summer day, you can jump right into Sylvan Lake and cool off!
Drop a line and catch your dinner. You might land a largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, Northern pike or perch.
