South Dakota's Badlands National Park is one of our greatest natural treasures, but sometimes you need to set out on a journey to get up close and personal with the amazing rock formations. This one trail in Badlands National Park is a bit difficult, but well worth the effort. Climb up ladders to reach heights that not many have, and see South Dakota in a whole new way.
Welcome to Notch Trail: a beautiful trail through South Dakota's Badlands.
This trail might be only 1.5 miles long, but it's quite challenging.
Notch Trail leads you through a valley and up to a notch in the rock formations.
These ladders aren't very steep, but you still might want to steer away if you're afraid of heights.
If you do take on this amazing trail, the payoffs are huge.
After you hike through the canyon floor and up the ladder, you'll be rewarded with amazing views of White River Valley.
Along the way you'll even find nesting swallows!
Before you embark on this hike, make sure you're wearing sturdy, safe shoes, have plenty of water, and aren't afraid of heights. It's also advised to steer clear of this trail after rain, as the terrain can become slippery and hazardous.
Contact a ranger at Badlands National Park by calling (605) 433-5361 to check conditions before you set out on your hike.
Completing this small but hefty hike pays off in the best views of the Badlands!
Notch Trail's trailhead starts at the Door and Window trails parking area, on the south side.
