Are you looking to beat the summer crowds and discover someplace new and exciting? If so, you are in luck, as there is never a shortage of new places to visit and new things to try around South Dakota, including the criminally overlooked and underrated LaFramboise Island Nature Area:
Located just southwest of Pierre, the LaFramboise Island Nature Area is a beautiful enclave that is full of surprises.
Nestled along the Missouri River, the LaFramboise Island Nature Area is as historic as it is stunning, as the isle was both explored by Lewis and Clark and mentioned in some of their 1804 journal entries.
According to their writings, Lewis and Clark had an unpleasant encounter with the Sioux, which earned it the nickname "Bad Humor Island."
When you visit this South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks-managed island today, you will discover a true outdoor oasis that has everything from fishing to boating and birdwatching.
Do you love to hike? Then LaFramboise Island Nature Area is the place for you, too, thanks to the stunning La Framboise Island Loop: a 4-mile loop trail that is good for all ages and skill levels.
While there is no doubt that LaFramboise Island Nature Area is gorgeous, it is also said to be a hotbed for ghosts, making it a favorite for paranormal lovers as well.
According to some eye-witness accounts, the spirit of a Native American woman warns visitors to turn back and steer clear of the hiking trails, while others report seeing and hearing ghosts in the trees.
