With a rich history and acres upon acres of lovely, enchanting botanical gardens, McCrory Gardens in South Dakota is the definition of a state gem just waiting to be explored this coming spring!
Meander through over 25 acres of gorgeous display gardens and 35 acres of arboretum full of hundreds of different grasses, shrubs, trees, and stunning flowers. This unique botanical garden is maintained and operated by South Dakota State University.
There are jaw-dropping views at every glance and plenty of area to explore. Enjoy the refreshing fragrance of thyme, basil, oregano, or chives herbs as you make your way through the glorious Herb Garden.
Stroll through the plentiful collection of plants found in the Perennial Garden and view the raised beds, the 5 tier water fountain, and gorgeous shrub roses.
President’s Garden features a large green space that is bordered by perennials, beds, the Lily Collection,
" target="_blank"> Red Garden, and other gorgeous gardens.
This tranquil area is the most popular space for wedding ceremonies and events.
The quaint Cottage Garden is another stunning highlight. Using an informal design, the Cottage Garden is full of charm and beauty. Marvel at the annuals, perennials, oriental plants, and the Weeping Willow.
The Butterfly Garden is complete with cone flowers, Globe Thistles for the butterflies and bees to enjoy, and a unique butterfly house.
Popular with all ages, the Sensory Garden offers the unique opportunity to get up close and personal with plants that appeal to all 5 senses. You’ll find tasty strawberries, velvety plants, and the distinct smell of various herbs.
The arboretum is located on the north side of McCrory Garden filled with shrubs and trees that thrive even in our harsh climate. As the staff attempts to expand the area and discover more species that can thrive in the South Dakota climate, they are consistently trailing new selections of trees and shrubs.
The selection, evaluation, and display of ornamental plants that can thrive in South Dakota’s climate has always been the prime initiate of McCrory Gardens, named after after Professor S.A. McCrory who headed the garden site’s research department from 1947 until his death in 1964.
