Jewel Cave National Monument. Wind Cave National Park. Rushmore Cave. You have visited these famous caves more times than you can count and know all there is to know about them. But did you know that there is a little-known South Dakota cave area that is positively magical come winter? Come with us as we explore the surreal frozen caves at Spearfish Canyon in South Dakota.
Located in Spearfish is the breathtaking Spearfish Canyon.
It is home to some of the best scenery and waterfalls in the State of South Dakota!
If you have visited Spearfish Canyon before, we recommend going again...
... especially if you have yet to see the Community Caves.
Hidden above the treetops, the Community Caves do take a bit of clever footwork to reach.
But it is well worth it for the scenic South Dakota views.
The landscape is beautiful here anytime of the year.
It's one of the things that makes South Dakota a great tourism destination.
While the caves are great to visit year round...
... we wholeheartedly endorse seeing them during the winter, as they come to life with all of that South Dakota winter ice and snow.
To access the caves, follow Highway 14A.
This is also known as the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. Follow it to mile marker 13, which is located right next to the trail parking lot.
