Who's ready for spring? After many months of frigid temperatures and howling, icy winds, spring in South Dakota is welcomed with open arms. Here are nine things that most of us do to welcome the new season.
1. We put our sweaters away the minute the temperature hits 45 degrees... only to dig them back out for the snowstorm that inevitably hits in April.
Sure, the weather seems nice and balmy, but Mother Nature is just fooling with you.
2. But some of us are stubborn enough to wear those shorts and flip flops anyway.
So our toes get a little frostbitten while we shovel snow; we're tough enough to handle it.
3. We start dreaming of the sausage at Schmeckfest.
Every March, the residents of Freeman emerge from the homes and shake off the winter blues to attend Schmeckfest. This fundraising festival includes some incredibly tasty German food and a musical to entertain you. Read our full article about Schmeckfest here.
4. We scan the prairie for the first real sign of spring.
Once we see the pasque flowers blooming, we know we've arrived.
5. These little guys are our other favorite sign of spring.
We almost don't mind when they eat all the buds off the plants in our yards, because they're just so darn cute.
6. Speaking of baby animals... how about those fuzzy chicks at the feed store?
There's nothing more adorable than a fuzzy little baby chicken.
7. We make our campground reservations.
We know better than to wait until June to reserve our favorite campsite or cabin.
8. We're chomping at the bit to plant those seedlings.
It's so hard to be patient... but it's worth the wait so they don't all just freeze to death outside.
9. We head for the hills.
There's nothing more refreshing than a spring hike, and who cares if there's still a little bit of snow on the ground?
