To satisfy our love of beautiful, short and sweet, or butt-busting hikes, we must include the Spokane Ghost Town Trail in South Dakota (offline maps available on AllTrails+). Thanks to trails in literally every corner of the state, our hike urges are covered. But for those creep aficionados out there like me, who love hiking, consider this trail through the ruins of an abandoned ghost town.
Welcome to the haunting in Spokane, South Dakota.
Unlike other South Dakota ghost towns, Spokane is not accessible by car, so come prepared to walk 2 miles out and back, with a strong suggestion to come before nightfall.
Founded in 1890, Spokane - like many towns of its time - was intended to be a gold mining town but would turn up even more precious ore, including silver, copper, and lead, for starters.
Back in the day, Spokane would also hit a lull once the surrounding mines dried up, leaving the city all but deserted by 1940.
What remains lay in this creepy Spokane Ghost Town?
When visiting Spokane Ghost Town today, we discover what is left of this historic area, including the old schoolhouse, empty homes and foundations, and a creepy root cellar.
Despite other businesses trying to come in and revamp the town and mines, Spokane would remain a ghost town, leaving behind haunting remnants of a happier and more prosperous time.
Not to mention a rusty car or two.
What happened here that such a cool car could be left behind?
At least one gravesite also exists of the late James Fernando Shepard whose life ended tragically, according to his tombstone, making it the creepiest hike in South Dakota.
He was born in 1850 and died in 1908. Above his name the tombstone reads, "In loving memory of his grandchildren," and below his name reads, "murdered over a mining claim.”
Spokane Ghost Town Trail can be found by taking Iron Mountain Road to Forest Service Road 330, turning north, and looking for the marked Forest Service trail.
And we always use caution when stumbling across these old buildings and structures: Accidents can happen - we wouldn't want to leave anyone behind.
