While fall is a gorgeous time here in the Mount Rushmore State, it can also get downright chilly, leaving you scrambling for somewhere that is warm and - dare we say - tropical. Sadly, South Dakota isn't typically thought of as a tropical destination; however, we do have a unique attraction that will give you your fill of the tropics, which is the beautiful Butterfly House & Aquarium:
Located in Sioux Falls, the must-see Butterfly House & Aquarium is arguably the most magical spot in eastern South Dakota, thanks to its many colorful residents.
Opened in 2002, the Butterfly House & Aquarium is a first of its kind state attraction, as it houses both the only public saltwater aquarium and year-round butterfly house in South Dakota.
What exactly is a Butterfly House? As the name suggests, it is home to nearly 1,000 free-flying butterflies that come from all over the world.
Do you want to get an even better look at these beautiful creatures? During your visit, you can rent your own butterfly feeding equipment for only $3!
Talk about a unique photo opp!
In addition to the butterflies, the Butterfly House & Aquarium houses - you guessed it! - 10,000 gallons worth of aquariums.
Featuring thousands of species of fish and crustaceans, the Butterfly House will make you think you've left the Queen City for a warm Hawaiian vacation.
As if seeing the fish was not enough, you can also touch them in the exciting Stingray Touch and Pacific Tide Pools!
Admission to the Butterfly House & Aquarium costs $9 for children (ages 3 to 9), $12 for adults (ages 13 to 59), and $11 for seniors (ages 60+).
The Butterfly House & Aquarium is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
