The Black Hills National Forest covers more than 1.25 million acres in South Dakota, and includes some of our state's most incredible natural beauty. The towns here are small, but tend to get plenty of visitors, because who doesn't want to spend some time in this gorgeous country? You'll find lots of charming restaurants in this region, but the most popular, according to TripAdvisor.com, is Black Hills Burger and Bun Co. in Custer. Why? Let's find out!
Black Hills Burger & Bun Co. was founded in 2012 by the Smith family. You'll find it at 414 Mt. Rushmore Road, in Custer.
The burgers here are so tasty that there's often a long wait. Don't worry - it's worth it!
The inside is warm and cozy, with many of its historical features intact, including exposed brick walls, hardwood floors and stained glass windows.
Start with an order of Dimock Dairy cheese curds - fried to perfection and served with tangy ranch dressing.
Or, try the fried pickles.
How do you make a burger that's better than your average fast food place? You start with fresh ingredients. This place bakes their own buns here, every single day.
They also grind beef and buffalo fresh daily.
The result? Burgers so tasty that you'll drive clear to Custer just to get one!
One of the house specials is the Hot Granny, which comes with cream cheese, bacon, fresh jalapenos and a special jalapeno sauce. You can add grilled onions, too (as pictured).
Another favorite is the Fat Smitty, which comes with cheddar cheese, bacon, a fried egg, lettuce, tomato and garlic aioli.
Try to save some room for dessert, because the peach cobbler is amazing.
Visit Black Hills Burger & Bun Co. Monday through Friday from 11am to 2:30pm and 5:00 pm to 7:30pm; Saturday from 11am to 2:30pm; closed Sunday.
