The hike up to Table Rock is unrivaled in the Palmetto State. From the many perfectly placed big flat rocks that form natural steps to carry you up to the picture-perfect view from the summit, to the sheer accomplishment of actually getting there, Table Rock is one winter hike that'll deliver South Carolina to your very soul.
That being said, Table Rock has been tugging at the heartstrings of true South Carolinians in the past weeks. The massive wildfire that began the second week of November on neighboring Pinnacle Mountain has moved under the base of this giant landmark scarring some of the beautiful landscape and delivering much smoke to the entire state.
It's a sad time for everyone and we pray the fires are contained and then extinguished very soon, and that no one is injured in the process.
With that in mind, THIS winter hike should wait until after the wildfire has been extinguished. But that doesn't mean we can't daydream about the day Table Rock State Park is reopened and access to this trail (and others) is readily available. You can keep an eye on the park's open/close status here on the State Parks' website. To help you visualize that hike and to make that daydream more real, here's a short video of the hike to the summit of Table Rock from YouTube user Brad Smith.
Sometimes, we don't really appreciate something until we (nearly) lose it. Will you be making a pilgrimage to Table Rock State Park and to the top of Table Rock after the park reopens?
