One of the best things about South Carolina's perfect size is that it only takes a few hours to get from one border to the opposite border. This means that day trips to our farthest-reaching state parks like Kings Mountain, which is only a stone's throw from the North Carolina border, are entirely possible no matter where you live in the Palmetto State. If you love chasing waterfalls in South Carolina as much as you love chasing history, then a visit to Kings Mountain State Park and its block hand-laid stair-step waterfall is in order.
The enormous staircase waterfall is the overflow spillway for Lake Crawford, one of two lakes within Kings Mountain State Park.
And while it was never meant to be used as actual steps, it's still a striking sight to visit.
The Kings Mountain waterfall serves as the spillway for a 13-acre lake used primarily for fishing by park guests. The park offers non-motorized boats for fishing as well as kayak and canoe rentals for paddlers.
The park and the spillway were built in the 1930s by the CCC. Those who love history can almost hear the men at work laying each rough block one by one to create the perfectly pitched stairs.
With nearly 7,000 acres, Kings Mountain State Park provides visitors with a number of outdoor activities.
A campground carved into the natural flora doles out 115 marvelous campsites, each with electric and water. A total of 15 equestrian campsites make sunrise trail riding with your own horse a reality.
Speaking of trails, Kings Mountain State Park offers more than 20 miles of hiking trails and another 30 miles of trails just for equestrians. If you love to hike, then this is the perfect spot to do it.
The Ridgeline Trail extends well beyond the park's boundaries connecting three parks and two states. From the trail's high points the views are astounding.
If you've yet to discover this wonderful state park and its hidden staircase waterfall in South Carolina, then make this your year for adventure.
