1. Riley Moore Falls

Whether your goal is to reach a secluded little beach at the base of a waterfall, or just spend some time in nature on a hike to a fun destination, this 1.9 mile round trip trek is sure to please. 2. Issaqueena Falls

This lovely stacked waterfall towers at a whopping 100 feet in height. The trail to an observation point at the top of the waterfall is a mere .03 mile and begins at Tunnel Park in Walhalla. Tunnel Park is also home to Stumphouse Tunnel (another South Carolina gem), so you can double your pleasure with two attractions in one visit. 3. Moonshine Falls

Speaking of history, this walk-behind waterfall is widely believed to have been home to a clandestine moonshine operation in a bygone era. Perhaps it's because the moonshiners left behind a lot of equipment that's now decaying in the cave under the overhang. Getting to this unique waterfall is a bit of a challenge, but nothing that can't be overcome. It's a 2.8-mile hike that involves getting permission from a landowner. 4. Rainbow Falls

The tallest waterfall in South Carolina is also one of the most difficult to reach, but if you have the hiking skills and the stamina to get here... the rewards are tremendous. The trail is rated moderate and is 2.5 miles each way. (Also, it's not usually as crowded as the above photo, which shows a hiking group enjoying the hard-earned spoils of their trek.)

5. Reedy Cove Falls (a.k.a. Twin Falls)

Your kids will love this easy 2.3-mile round trip hike that delivers spectacular views of not one, but two 75-foot waterfalls! Not only is the payoff amazing, but there is much to see and admire along the trail. There's a lot to enjoy about Reedy Cove Falls, no matter the time of year you visit.

The rest of this list features one (maybe two) waterfalls at a time, but to experience an entire state park filled with waterfalls, head to Jones Gap State Park in Marietta, SC. The Middle Saluda River has a multitude of cascades filled with the sounds of rushing or trickling water, and the trails are filled with vertical waterfalls too (including Rainbow Falls listed above...). 7. Wildcat Wayside

Last but certainly not least on our list of the best hikes in South Carolina to waterfalls is Wildcat Wayside. Discover a nature trail that doles out three different waterfalls and some other great sights as you make your way up a series of steps to this three-part waterfall located on the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway (SC-11). The third, and lowest, waterfall in the trio is even visible from the road if you don't want the challenge of climbing up to the other two levels. Head here in warm weather and enjoy a refreshing dip in the cool waters of the lowest fall. (Note: Part of the trail to the uppermost fall may be closed due to slippery rocks, so don't go beyond the posted signs.)
