No matter the season, hiking abounds in South Carolina with trails to suit any level of hiking skill. Throw in some kind of water feature, whether it's a stream, a waterfall, or the ocean, and it adds another layer of natural wonder to the overall experience.
The trail to Spoonauger Falls, located near Mountain Rest and a stone's throw from the Chattooga River on the border of South Carolina and Georgia, is rated as easy. It also gets the thumbs-up equivalent of 4.5 out of 5 stars by alltrails.com users who review the hike.
The trail to Spoonauger Falls is actually a short spur trail from the Chattooga River Trail. The overall length of the hike from where you enter the Chattooga River Trail is a mere 0.6-miles.
And while it is rated as easy, it's not exactly a piece of cake for the entire short hike.
But it does lead to a wonderful, five-story waterfall that towers 50 feet over the landscape.
By the way, even though we've included a photo of a person standing on a rock in front of the falls, this is a not a recommended course of action. The rocks here can be very slippery, so please use caution.
En route to the falls, you'll cross a stream that will need some careful negotiation. Just be aware of it and prepare for what may seem like a challenge. Most hikers find it's not as difficult as it looks.
And remember, in the end, the payoff is huge! What a beautiful destination hike!
The trail begins along Burrells Ford Road at an entrance to the Chattooga River Trail. Parking is available, but limited.
At about the halfway point, the trail takes a right turn over to Spoonauger Falls, as seen in the map here.
