Jones Gap State Park near Marietta, South Carolina is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts in the Palmetto State. But what most don't know is that you don't have to be a champion hiker or a masterful climber to enjoy the fruits of this 3,600+ acre paradise.
Known for being a part of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area and its inclusion in the most extensive trail system in the state, Jones Gap State Park has other endearing qualities.
For instance, South Carolina's first ever state-designated "Scenic River" runs through this Park. The Middle Saluda River is a gorgeous stream that's gained a reputation among trout fisherman.
And it's beautiful in every season!
In addition, visitors to the park can enjoy a variety of trails, not all of them are strenuous, either.
In all, Jones Gap has a little over 30 miles of trails to enjoy. All hikers are required to register at the camp office before departure.
The trout pond at Jones Gap and the fish hatchery are a popular spot to explore. Here you'll see three different kinds of trout milling about in the pond.
Jones Gap is so beautiful you may decide to stay a while. One of the best kept secrets in the Palmetto State is the spectacular trailside camping available at this park.
There are primitive sites (no facilities) available and they're all as amazing as this one. You'll need to reserve in advance and expect to carry everything in that you'll need. These aren't the kind of spots you can pull your car or RV in to.
Jones Gap's 30 miles of trails offer some amazing payoffs. Because this park is located in a mountain cove you'll find many charming bridges crossing creeks and streams.

One of the more difficult trails at Jones Gap, is the relatively short 2.2 mile out-and-back trek to Rainbow Falls. The trail may be short but it's mostly an uphill climb.
And the payoff is a million dollar view of a 140-foot waterfall the likes of which you won't see anywhere else in South Carolina!
