The Pinnacle Mountain wildfire has grown to swallow 6,000 acres in the upstate of South Carolina. In a recent update on the South Carolina Forestry Commission's Facebook page, it's reported the fires are now moving north beyond our beloved Table Rock and even into the northeastern part of Greenville County.
Here you seen Table Rock and the smoke from this monumental South Carolina wildfire. It's a view that likely breaks the hearts of all South Carolinians, not just those in the upstate.
Even the normally picturesque Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway is having trouble living up to the name, as smoke continues to roll off this epic wildfie in the Palmetto State.
A command post set up at Aunt Sue's near Pickens illustrates the equipment moving in and out, as well as the proximity of the blaze to this location.
The firefighters on hand are accustomed by now to getting up close with this wildfire that started on Pinnacle Mountain less than two weeks ago.
The South Carolina Forestry Commission reports more than 250 personnel are battling the fire today. More help was requested yesterday to help fight the northward terriroty where the current spreading is taking place.
You can see from this illustration, the dark blue circle in the bottom left quadrant is where the fire was originally burning on November 10, 2016. That blue area represents only 228 acres. The progression away from that area represents the growth in the last 12 days. The bright yellow area in the top center is the area of the most recent spreading in the last day.
In all, the estimate to fight this one fire in South Carolina is a whopping two million dollars so far. The Central Utah Type 3 Team flew over part of the Pinnacle Mountain fire on Monday and took this three minute video footage of this catastrophic blaze in South Carolina's upstate. It's a heartbreaking gut-wrenching event to witness.
You may be wondering just what you can do to help. Firstly, you can be vigilant. It's the dry season and the SC Forestry Commission doesn't need to fight any more wildfires. If you see anything that looks like an out of place fire then report it immediately. Secondly, you can stay out of the way of the firefighters. Some roads near the fires may be closed, even some main roads. That means no through traffic and no sightseers. And lastly, you can pray.
