Today we have an afternoon of paddling planned for you – on a South Carolina creek. You will not want to swim here. You will want to enjoy boundless wildlife viewing, and getting up close and personal with big old cypress trees. What kind of wildlife you ask? Why, perhaps a gator or two even (from a distance of course). This is definitely a South Carolina rural spot to make a splash - with your paddle! Off we go then to the Francis Marion National Forest.
Rural Wambaw Creek is found north of Charleston, in McClellanville.
If you like, bring your own kayak, and plot your own course, as you paddle the creek.
Take a look at the creek’s tide chart, so you can let the tide carry you on your ride.
Or, you could join one of the guided tours offered in the creek - if you prefer a group atmosphere.
Nature Adventures Outfitters and Coastal Expeditions both offer guided kayak tours on Wambaw Creek.
An alligator enjoys sunning itself on a log along the creek.
You could see some playful otters too.
Notice the impressive Cyprus trees as you float by.
Another treat is to get a look at the Prothonotary Black Warblers that inhabit the area.
Keep a lookout for other birds such as osprey.
We just had to add one more photo of an alligator. He’s posing after all.
Fall is always a nice time for paddling as well.
If you like paddling Wambaw Creek, we hear that Quinby Creek, also in Francis Marion National Forest, may be another good option.
I will forever be discovering nooks and crannies in South Carolina, be it a creek to paddle in like Wambaw, or a small town filled with historical charm - cue McClellanville. Wambaw Creek is a South Carolina rural spot to make a splash. To take a guided kayak tour on Wambaw Creek, visit the Coastal Expeditions website or the Nature Adventures Outfitters Facebook page.
