South Carolina is an outdoor lover's paradise. From the swift ocean breezes found along the coastline to the gorgeous mountain views in the Upstate, we just can't seem to get enough of the great outdoors in the Palmetto State. If you're an experienced hiker, then you'll want to make sure you conquer the following trail, and if you're not, then you will likely love seeing the highlights below of one of the most technical - and naturally beautiful - trails in the state.
The Rim of the Gap to Jones Gap Trail is one of the most picturesque trails in South Carolina. It's also one of the hardest. It should be attempted only be seasoned, experienced hikers.
The best views found on the trail aren't what you'd think. There are some long range views like this one, but even this one comes at a price. Just look at how narrow that footpath is at this point on the hike. (Fortunately, you won't always be clinging to the side of a mountain during this adventure.)
The real sights on this 11.5 mile loop hike aren't long range mountain vistas.
As you make you way mostly under the shade of a canopy of trees, you'll encounter several waterfalls hidden deep within the woods.
The hike also has many water crossings, some with bridges, and some without!
You may find yourself scrambling over a creek on nothing more than stones, or on a rustic bridge like the one below. It definitely will heighten the adventure. But if a few creek crossings don't get your adrenaline flowing...
Then the many ladders found on this trail will surely do the trick. Some are completely vertical, and while they are fun, they're also potentially dangerous if you lose your footing.
The trail features a rock that's famously called Weight Watchers Rock. It has a narrow opening you have to squeeze your body though, or find another way around — or over!
The rocks and the cliffs are monumental, and are a gorgeous feature of this day hike. You'll find yourself scrambling around, over and through enormous rocks, cliffs and boulders for much of the day.
And lest we not forget about the stairs. Trust us: by the end of the hike you'll be seeing these in your sleep for weeks — which is just about how long your glutes may feel the burn! Most of the trail has elevation changes.
The Rim of the Gap loop in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area is one of the most challenging and fulfilling hikes in all of South Carolina!
This trail is considered strenuous and is for experienced hikers only. You'll find the location of the trailhead at this link.
